Solstice is a bi-annual astronomical event which corresponds to the Sun reaching its highest or lowest excursion relative to the celestial equator. The word solstice comes from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still) – the seasonal movement of the Sun’s path as seen from Earth comes to halt before reversing direction. From North Pole, the sun reaches the highest point in sky once a year in the month of June and similarly in South Pole it is in the month of December. When it is summer solstice in one pole, it is winter solstice in the other pole.
