Misoprostol was invented and marketed by G.D. Searle & Company (now Pfizer) under the trade name Cytotec, but other trade names and generic formulations are available. It is a synthetic prostaglandin, and is one of the commonly used medicines to induce labor for pregnant women and also to prevent from stomach ulcers.
