The Indian sweet ‘Khir Mohana’ or more popularly known as rasgulla (a bowl of sweet, syrupy, soft cheese balls) has its origin to the modern-day state of Odisha. Rasgulla was part of a ritual and can be tracked back to 11th century when this sweet dish was offered to Goddess Lakshmi on the last day of Rath Yatra as prasad. According to Indian mythology, Jagannath, an avatar of Vishnu on his return from Gundicha temple after a nine-day vacation (Rath Yatra) offered rasgulla to Lakshmi, his consort in order to appease her and get entry to his home. This is connection of the sweet to the ritual which is followed to this day.
