FACT FOOD #196

Margaret Sanger, an American activist was the first to coin the term ‘birth control’ in the 1920’s and is also credited with opening of the first birth control clinic in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Thirty years later, in the 1950’s, Sanger, the activist, Gregory Pincus, the scientist and Katherine Dexter McCormick (a biologist and a heiress to a great fortune) came together, wherein Katherine donated $40,000 for birth control research. This series of events led to the creation of birth-control pill, which in 1960 was approved by FDA for contraceptive use.
