The scientific name of Cashew is ‘Anacardium’, the name originates from the Greek language (ana means ‘upwards’ and cardium means ‘heart’). The cashew was native to Brazil and the Portuguese introduced cashew to Goa in the 1560’s and with time became popular across India. The English name cashew comes from the Portuguese name for the fruit of cashew tree ‘caju’ and this word in turn is derived from the indigenous South American Tupian name acajú, which means ‘nut that produces itself’.
