The inauguration of ATM in UK by Reg Varney on June 27, 1967
In the 1960’s, at the request of many bankers, the engineers in Japan, Sweden and Britain came up with prototypes for automated cash machines. The first of which was put into use by Barclays Bank in Enfield Town, North London on June 27, 1967. Comedy actor Reg Varney inaugurated this machine, the invention of which is credited to John Shepherd-Barron from the printing firm De La Rue (known for banknote manufacturing, security printing, paper-making and cash handling systems).
