The word ‘tornado’ comes from the alternated Spanish word tronada, which means ‘thunderstorm’. Tronada in turn comes from the Latin word tonare, meaning ‘to thunder’. According to folk mythology, the present name is derived from a combination of the words ‘tronada’ and tronar (to turn), possible reference to the twister.
