During European colonisation of India and South East Asia, Nicobar Islands were first colonised by Danish East India Company in 1754. Denmark’s presence in the islands ended formally on 16th October 1868, when the company sold the rights to Britain, which a year later made the islands part of British India. During WW II, Japan had occupied the islands for a period of three years from 1942 to 1945. Since 1950, it has been a union territory along with Andaman Islands.
