One of the oldest social dances still performed is Schuhplattler (shoe-slapping dance) and is a traditional folk dance popular in the regions of Bavaria and Austria. A dance similar to this was described in 1050 in the poem ‘Ruodlieb’ written by a monk, which depicts similar postures and movements of the Schuhplattler.
