FACT FOOD #114

For years Friedrich August Kekulé, the German organic chemist had tried to find the molecular structure of Benzene in vain. One night in 1865 he fell asleep in front of the fireplace and dreamt of atoms swirling around in long chains; in his dream, he said “everything was moving in a snake like and twisting manner; suddenly one snake got hold of its own tail and the whole structure was moving twisting in front of my eye…”. The result of this dream was the discovery of the structure of the carbon ring in Benzene which paved the way for a revolution in organic chemistry.
