The Battle of Somme also called Bataille de la Somme in French and Schlacht an der Somme in German was a battle of the First World War fought by the joint army forces of the British and French empires against the German Empire. It took place between July 1st and November 18th 1916 on both sides of the River Somme in France. Known as one of the largest battles of WWI, it had causalities reported over 1,000,000 men either wounded or killed, which makes it one of the tragic events in human history.
