Drive in Theatre, the concept was the brain child of Richard M. Hollingshead, a car salesman. At first, the film was projected from the hood of his car on to a bed sheet, securely fastened to tree trunks in his back yard in Camden, New Jersey. The sound was broadcast from a radio placed behind the screen and, later, from speakers which he mounted on trees. Hollingshead was granted a patent in May 1933 and the first drive in theatre opened on June 6, 1933 in Camden, New Jersey.
