The river Ravi also called Iravati, takes its name from Airavata – a mythological white elephant who carries the Hindu god Indra. The Irrawaddy River or Ayeyarwady River in Burma gets its name from Iravati (Ravi river), through its Pali, rather than its Sanskrit form.
