In the old royal navy of the 1700’s and 1800’s, sailors who wanted to fight with each other would often take huge iron bars, which were used to hold and melt iron for cannonballs, and use these as weapons to try and hit each other. The phrase ‘At Loggerheads’ meaning “enemies” or “adversaries” originated from the name given to these bars (loggerheads).
