Charlie Mensuel was a former French comics magazine which began its publication in 1969 until 1986. The name ‘Charlie’ was an homage to ‘Charlie Brown‘, hero of the popular comic strip “Peanuts“.

When the Hara-Kiri Hebdo, another comics magazine was banned by the Interior Ministry of France for their satirical views through comics, the team decided to change the name and decided to use Charlie Hebdo, name derived from Charlie Mensuel. If you are wondering what is ‘hebdo’, it is short for ‘hebdomadaire‘ used in French meaning ‘weekly’.
