Ned Hanlon was the manager of the Baltimore Orioles in the 1890’s and his team developed a high risk, but high rewarding strategy called ‘Hit and Run’. It employs a stolen base attempt to try to place the defending infielders out of position for an attempted base hit. The tactics were devised during training at Georgia in 1894. Its implementation came in that season’s opener against the New York Giants and not surprisingly, the tactic raised a few eyebrows.
