During the American civil war, Abraham Lincoln wanted the black slaves to fight in the union against the confederate army. He promised every black man 40 acres and a mule upon their emancipation after the war. Needless to say, the slaves were freed but very few of them ever saw that land or mule. In tribute to this, Spike Lee has a production company named ‘ 40 acres and a mule’.
