Louis McManus, an American television engineer is best known as the designer of the Emmy award and symbol for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. He was awarded an Emmy statue in 1948 for his work in designing the Emmy. 

The Academy president suggested the statuette be called “Immy” a term used for an early image camera. “Immy” soon became “Emmy”. The wings on the statuette represent the muse of art. The atom represents the electron of science.

An Emmy is considered to be the TV equivalent to the Oscar for film, a Grammy for music and the Tony for stage.
