General Sir Samuel Browne was a major commanding the Second Punjab Irregular Cavalry during the 1857 Sepoy mutiny. He lost his left arm when he charged and captured a Sepoy cannon, for which he was awarded a Victoria Cross. He stayed on in the army, though his left arm was amputated. To help him continue in his job, he designed a belt – a weapons belt fitted with a pistol holster and a sword sling, and with a single two stranded cross belt which is named after him and is worn by officers in almost every single army in the world.
