Francis Xavier McNamara was in the tarpaulin business. In 1949, while entertaining clients at Major Cabin Grill’s restaurant in New York, he realized he had forgotten his wallet. His wife paid the bill that day. McNamara went home and dreamed up something and along with his attorney friend Ralph Schneider started the ‘Diners Club International’ in 1950 – a card which is credited by historians as the beginnings of contemporary credit card.
