The light from the flash of the camera penetrates the eyeball, bounces off the retina (the inside back of the eyeball) and is reflected out from the front of the eye. Because the retina has a large grouping of arteries, the light reflected back is red. This is the ‘Red-Eye’ phenomenon in photography.
