Raja Harishchandra is a 1913 Indian silent movie directed and produced by Dadasaheb Phalke. This is officially recognised as India’s first movie. Dadasaheb Phalke is widely known as the father of Indian cinema and in 1969, the Government of India instituted an award for lifetime achievement in Indian cinema honour named after Dadasaheb Phalke. It is awarded annually during the National film awards.
